Can supplements help your unfocused or anxious thoughts?

So do you really  need medication to help your unfocused, anxious,  overwhelmed or sad thoughts?  Maybe not.  Dr. Amen founder of the  Amen Clinics, believes in “First Do No Harm” and as one of his Brain Certified Health Coaches, I feel the same. There are certain neurotransmitters (chemicals in our brain), that control our emotions and thoughts.  We have roughly 60+ neurotransmitters, however there are only a handful that you should keep in mind and some are made in your gu!.  So does a can of mountain dew impact your thinking?  It certainly does and it leads to stinken thinken! Here’s the low down on the ones that are most important and the ones you should know about Serotonin – considered our feel good chemical.  One of my personal favorites.  I guess some people have favorite shoes, lol, I have my favorite neurotransmitter.  Serotonin helps to negate your overwhelming thoughts (think of a gear shifter or a hamster on a wheel that can’t get off the wheel), helps control your appetite and may assist in getting a more restful nights sleep.  However  my favorite part is that it helps decrease your worries and concerns when something isn’t going right and you can’t seem to switch the gear and move on…  I bet you didn’t know that approximately 95% of your serotonin is made in your gut???  Hmmm, have you looked at all the sugar in that can of mountain dew??? My next favorite is GABA.  GABA is an amino acid that also functions as a neurotransmitter.  It is the one of the few calming neurotransmitters you have as most other neurotransmitters excite the brain.  Consider GABA the relaxing supplement of choice.  With so much on our to do lists, GABA could be exactly what you need when you are overwhelmed and can’t figure out where to start because your mind is too busy focusing on the negative.  GABA + Meditation = A match made in heaven in my eyes. Next in line is dopamine.  Without this neurotransmitter, no one would be able to focus let alone have the attention to bring a project or task to closure.  Think of the world we live in today and sadly there is way too much going on for anyone human to do in one day, cell phone converstations, meetings, household chores, getting kids from place to place,  texting your friends, social media check-ins and endless follows on twitter to say the least.  Our minds are bombarded daily with multi-tasking that a majority of our day is trying to figure out what we’ve already done.  Our kids today have the inability to stay focused on tasks and some  teachers seem to tell parents that there child has ADHD and should be medicated (with Ritalin I might add which is actually speed)  when in fact, maybe the parent just needs to be educated that sending their child to school with better quality (not more expensive) food may be the solution to them fidgeting throughout the day.  Did you know that protein foods are the precursor to dopamine and that 50% of your dopamine is also made in your gut??? Then we have another fav which is Tyrosine.  Tyrosine is required for dopamine production.  Simply adding a pharmaceutical grade Tyrosine supplement can assist in helping someone’s attention span. So with this said, if you are looking for answers and are tired of getting the same old answer, “let me write you a prescription for that”, look no further because I’d love to answer your questions. A point to ponder on my friends…
